The feds just delayed the health reform mandate requiring health plans to provide a Summary of Benefits to workers. Employers were required to distribute these summaries by March 23, 2012. When’s the new deadline?
Get ready for more good news: There isn’t a new deadline — yet.
The Departments of Labor, Treasury and Health and Human Services have released an FAQ stating that compliance with the Summary of Benefits mandate will not be required until a date to be determined in the final rule.
And the feds gave no indication as to when a final rule would be published.
Under the mandate, health plans are required to provide enrolled employees with a summary of their benefits and coverage, as well as a plain English glossary of commonly used terms — like deductible and co-pay.
Both grandfathered and non-grandfathered plans are required to comply.
In addition, if a plan change takes place during the year, the plan must provide notice to all enrolled employees at least 60 days prior to the change kicking in.
